MAPFFA

The Jonathan Hager House and Museum has initiated a challenging research project known as MAPFFA - the Mid - Atlantic Private Frontier Forts Archives. The purpose of the project is to document all forts built privately by settlers during the French and Indian War (1756 - 1763), as opposed to military forts erected by provincial governments.

All details regarding settler's forts within the states of Maryland Virginia / West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Delaware will be housed at the Hager House offices. Also included are forts built at: mills, churches and trading posts or by communities. Some forts built prior to the conflict are included if they relate specifically to providing protection against hostile Indian attack.

To date, almost 300 forts have been identified in this region. Information collected includes, but is not limited to: owner, location, type of construction, defensive characteristics (such as palisades, blockhouses, stockade fences, loopholes, and fortified cellars), genealogical information, accounts of attacks, and how many still exist. Locations of forts have been placed on individual county maps, and the staff envisions producing an overall map showing these sites.

The Jonathan Hager House and Museum is the only facility dedicated to this painstaking research. Information about these forts may be obtained by contacting the Jonathan Hager House and Museum at:
