Elizabeth Kershner Hager
Herbal Gardens
Visitors to the Jonathan Hager House are fascinated by the
herbal and flower gardens, which surround the house on all
sides.
The plantings are based on known Colonial gardens.
Herbs were used not only for flavoring and seasoning, but
also for medicinal purposes as well. While there is no way
of knowing which herbs Elizabeth Kershner Hager grew, there
is certainty that she was familiar with most of the herbs
in these plantings today.

| Today the Hager House is now completely
outfitted with authentic furnishings of the period. It
depicts a life long since forgotten. |
The Antietam Garden Club cares for the front
herbal and flower gardens, and furnishes flowers for the interior
of the house. The Club also provides hostesses for the Jonathan
Hager Craft Days.
The Hager House staff cares for the side and
rear gardens
